There Was A Famine In The Land He Was Sent To

He was the one who was sure. That is the part he keeps turning over.

His wife was willing. She was more than willing; she is a good woman and she said yes properly, not the kind of yes that gets brought up later. But she was not the one who was sure, and everybody in that house knows it, including the children, who know more than anybody thinks.

It has been fourteen months.

It is harder here. He would say that out loud to almost nobody. The work is thinner than he was told. The place they are in is smaller than the place they left, and the winter here is a different animal, and his youngest has not made a real friend yet, and he watches that at the school gate in a way that takes something out of him every single morning.

And what he does is carry it.

He is cheerful at the table. He is genuinely cheerful, this is not an act exactly, because he loves them and being with them is the actual good part of the day. But he does a thing where he keeps the accounting to himself, and he prays about it in the car, and he has become the only person in the house who knows the size of it.

Fourteen months of that.

And the thought that comes at night, and it comes in his own voice, which is what makes it heavy: I moved everybody for this.

He is not angry at God. He would want that said. He is a man who still prays, and who still believes he heard, most days.

But he has stopped telling anybody about the hearing, because it feels like it would sound like a defense, and a man defending a decision his family is living inside is a man they have to be gentle with, and he would rather die than be that.

And you have carried an arrival too. You went where you were sent and it was thin when you got there, and you have been protecting somebody from the whole truth of it.

He arrived exactly where God sent him, and there was a famine there

There is a verse in Genesis that should be read out loud in every house where somebody moved on a word from God.

Abram is told to go to a land God will show him. He goes. He arrives. God appears to him there and says: to your offspring I will give this land, which is about as unambiguous as confirmation gets, and Abram builds an altar.

The very next verse is this.

Now there was a famine in the land. So Abram went down to Egypt to sojourn there, for the famine was severe in the land.Genesis 12:10

He is in the right place. God has just confirmed it to his face. And the land is empty of food.

The account does not treat that as a contradiction and it does not stop to explain it. It simply reports that the promised place was, at that moment, a hard place, and it moves on, because the writer does not expect his readers to find that surprising.

You are standing in a genuine place of promise that happens to be lean, and lean is not the same as wrong. It is written that there was a famine in the land God had just promised him (Genesis 12:10), and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a single unglamorous verse and lifts fourteen months off a man's back with it.

Now the carrying, because that is what is actually costing you.

Nowhere in Scripture is a man made the sole bearer of the weight of his own household's obedience. That is not a role God assigns. It is a role good men take on, quietly, out of love, and it is one of the heaviest things a person can pick up and one of the least noticed.

You have been the only one in the house who knows the size of it. That is fourteen months of carrying something alone in a house full of people who love you.

You are not required to be the only one who knows, and putting some of it down is not a failure of leadership, it is the shape a family is supposed to have. Scripture says bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ (Galatians 6:2), and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that possible inside a marriage, which means your wife is not somebody to be protected from the truth, she is somebody it can be carried with.

And the night thought, which is the sharpest one. I moved everybody for this.

Look at it in daylight. You heard, you weighed it, your wife said a real yes, and you went. That is not a man being reckless with his family. That is a household doing a thing together, and the fact that one of you was surer than the other is not a defect in the decision, it is just how households work.

You are not guilty of what has been thin about this year, and no scarcity in a place is a bill made out to the man who brought everybody there. It is written that there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1), and it is His Spirit rather than a hard winter who tells a man where he stands.

And the school gate deserves naming, because that is the real wound and it is not about him at all.

Watching your youngest with no friend yet is a specific grief and it has nothing to do with whether you heard God correctly. It is a father's love running into something he cannot fix by being right.

You are carrying a father's ache and not a father's failure, and those two have felt identical to you for fourteen months. Scripture says the Lord is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18), and it is the Holy Spirit who is at that gate every morning with you, which is a fact about the mornings you have not been told.
