Caught, Not Dropped2 Timothy 2:13

He Was Wrong In Public And Everybody Saw

This message is for a careful man who made a confident case in front of people, was shown plainly to be mistaken, and has since said nothing in any room that he cannot completely defend

He had thought about it for weeks. That is what he keeps coming back to, and it is the thing that makes it hard to put down.

He was not shooting from the hip. He had read around it, he had considered the obvious objections, and he had a position he could state clearly in about two minutes, and he stated it clearly in about two minutes, in a room of maybe thirty people, most of whom he respected.

And it was wrong.

Not partly. Not a matter of emphasis. There was a fact he did not have, and the fact was not obscure, and it was the kind of thing that once it is said out loud in a room, everybody in the room can see the whole structure come down at once, including him, while he is still standing there.

He said, ah. He said, that changes it, and then he said something about needing to think, and somebody moved the conversation on kindly.

Four years.

He still speaks in rooms. But he has a rule now, and he did not decide it, and it is this: he says nothing he cannot defend in every clause.

The effect of that rule is not what it sounds like. It does not make him more accurate. What it makes him is narrow, and slow, and enormously well qualified about a smaller and smaller area, and silent about everything at the edges, which is where all the interesting things are and where people actually need help.

He has become extremely reliable and much less useful.

And under the rule there is a specific memory that arrives, unbidden, about once a fortnight. Not the moment of being corrected. The half second before it, when he was still confident, and he can see himself standing there being confident, and that image is the one he cannot bear.

That is the picture he is protecting himself against. Not error. The look of a man who was sure.

And you have a room like that. You said something with your whole chest and it came down, and you have quietly narrowed your life to things that cannot come down.

He Was Wrong In Public And Everybody Saw

He remains faithful, and the reason given is about Him

There is a sentence in Second Timothy that ends an argument nobody wins on their own.

If we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself.2 Timothy 2:13

Read the reason. Not because He is patient with us, though He is. Not because our failure is small, because it is not always. He remains faithful for He cannot deny Himself, which locates the whole guarantee inside God's own nature and puts it entirely beyond the reach of our performance.

That is a sentence about being wrong, written to a young man being deployed into rooms where he would be wrong sometimes.

You are held by something that does not vary with your accuracy, and it has never varied with anybody's. It is written that if we are faithless He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself (2 Timothy 2:13), and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a doctrinal sentence like that land as relief in a careful man rather than filing itself away as a proposition he already agreed with.

Now the rule you never decided.

Say nothing you cannot defend in every clause.

Nobody in Scripture operates that way. Every letter Paul wrote contains sentences he could not have defended against a hostile examiner in every clause, because that is what language is when a person is actually trying to say something. The alternative is not greater accuracy. The alternative is saying only what is trivially safe.

And you know this, professionally, better than most people. You would never accept that standard from a student. You would tell them it produces nothing.

You are living under a standard you would never impose on anybody else, and you did not choose it, it was installed in a room. Scripture says the letter kills but the Spirit gives life (2 Corinthians 3:6), and it is the Holy Spirit who has been trying to get a living sentence out of a man who has been running everything through a defense check for four years.

And the image, which is the true wound.

The half second before, when you were still confident.

You cannot bear it because it looks like arrogance from the outside, in memory, and you are a man who has spent his life avoiding exactly that. But it was not arrogance. It was a man who had done the work, stating a considered position, missing one fact.

That is what confidence looks like from outside on every occasion, including all the occasions when it is right. There is no separate posture available for being confident and correct. The picture would have looked identical if the fact had gone the other way.

You are not looking at a picture of pride, and the image you cannot bear is a picture of a prepared man. It is written that God gives grace to the humble (James 4:6), and it is His Spirit who has produced in you the very humility you have been using as evidence against yourself.

And a word about the room.

Thirty people, most of whom you respect. Consider what they saw: a man who had thought about something, said it plainly, received a correction without argument, and said out loud that it changed things.

That is a rarer sight than you think and it is not what you have remembered.

You conducted yourself well in the two worst minutes of your public life. Scripture says whoever heeds reproof gains intelligence (Proverbs 15:32), and it is the Holy Spirit who was in the room when you said, that changes it, which is a sentence a great many men in that position never manage to say at all.

The breakthrough

So say one thing this month that you cannot defend in every clause.

Not carelessly. You are constitutionally incapable of careless and this page is not going to try to make you into somebody else. Say a true thing that lives at the edge of what you know, in a room, with the ordinary honest uncertainty of a person actually thinking.

Because what happened four years ago is that a prepared man missed one fact and said so immediately in front of thirty people.

That is not a disgrace, and it is not a lesson about the dangers of being sure. It is a Tuesday in the life of anybody who says anything at all.

You have not been disqualified from confidence, and the faithfulness holding you was never keyed to your accuracy. It is written that if we are faithless He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself (2 Timothy 2:13), and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that unmovable clause about God's own nature into a floor under a man who has been standing very carefully on his own for four years.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud at the table with your hand open, with the book left open beside you. You have the right to speak them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you rather than earned by being right. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a person. Speak first to the argument you made, then to the image that arrives every fortnight, then turn and speak to Him. Whatever He does with what you say next, the outcome is His to decide.

  1. Case I made and got wrong, you are one argument and you are not my judgment. The Word says He remains faithful because He cannot deny Himself, and that clause was never keyed to whether I had all the facts.
  2. Picture of myself half a second before the correction, you are a prepared man and you are not a proud one, and you are put down in the name of Jesus. It is written that God gives grace to the humble, and the Spirit produced in me the very humility I have been using as evidence against myself.
  3. Lord, thirty people watched a man take a correction and say out loud that it changed things, and You were the One in the room when I said it. My hand is open, one true thing gets said at the edge this month, and the defending of it is Yours.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
