She Taught It Wrong And Was Corrected In Front Of The Class

This message is for a woman who taught something confidently, had it corrected out loud by somebody in the room who was right, and has hedged every sentence she has said in front of a group since

She had prepared it for two weeks and she was pleased with it, which is the part that makes it worse.

There were about sixteen people. She was maybe twenty minutes in, on the second of three sections, and she said a thing about a passage with real confidence, because she had read four things about it and all four had said the same and she had not checked further.

A man in the second row said, gently, actually, I think that is not quite right.

And he was right. That was the thing. He was not being difficult and he was not showing off. He knew that passage, properly, in a way she did not, and what he said afterward in about ninety seconds was better than the twenty minutes she had just done.

She said, oh, thank you, that is helpful, and she moved on, and she got through the third section, and afterward two people said it had been really good.

Four years ago.

She teaches occasionally now, and here is what has happened to her sentences.

They all have hedges in them. It seems to me. I could be wrong about this. What I have read suggests. My understanding, and somebody may want to correct me here. She hedges things she has known cold for fifteen years, and she hedges them so smoothly that nobody in the room notices anything except that she is being humble, and everybody appreciates it.

She has counted them once. She stopped counting.

And what nobody knows, including her husband, is that she scans. She has become a person who scans a room while she is teaching, looking for the second row, checking faces for the beginning of the expression that man had.

It costs about a third of her attention. She teaches with two thirds of herself now, and she teaches well, and nobody has any idea.

And you have a correction like that. Somebody was right and you were wrong and it happened where people could see, and something about how you talk has never gone back to how it was.

She Taught It Wrong And Was Corrected In Front Of The Class

He was eloquent, fervent, accurate as far as he went, and taken aside

There is a man in Acts eighteen whose story is told in about five verses and every single one of them matters here.

Apollos is described as eloquent, competent in the Scriptures, fervent in spirit, teaching accurately the things concerning Jesus. That is four compliments in one sentence.

And then this.

He began to speak boldly in the synagogue, but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately.Acts 18:26

So he was teaching, publicly and boldly, with a genuine gap in what he knew.

Notice two things. The first is that his gap did not cancel his gift, and Luke does not withdraw a single one of those four compliments after the correction. The second is where the correcting happened, which is aside.

You have a gap and a gift at the same time, and Scripture describes a man carrying both without treating it as a scandal. It is written that they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately (Acts 18:26), and it is the Holy Spirit who lets a woman read that and stop hearing correction as removal.

Now, the man in the second row.

He did it in the room rather than aside, and he was gentle about it and he was right, and that matters, and it also matters that the setting cost you something the content did not.

You are allowed to hold both of those. He was right. It would have cost you less if he had said it afterward. Neither of those cancels the other, and nobody in this has to be the villain.

You are permitted to say that the manner of it hurt you without deciding that the substance of it was wrong. Scripture says let all things be done for building up (1 Corinthians 14:26), which is about how a room is meant to work rather than about whether a correction is accurate, and it is His Spirit who lets a person separate a true thing from a hard delivery instead of having to reject both or swallow both.

And the hedges, which are the actual injury.

Look at what a hedge does. It is a small piece of armor placed in front of a sentence so that nothing can land on the person saying it. And it works, and the cost is that nothing lands on anybody else either, because a sentence protected at the front arrives at the listener already halved.

You are hedging things you have known cold for fifteen years. Those are not tentative things. Presenting them as tentative is not humility; it is a wound wearing humility's coat, and the people in front of you are being handed less than you have.

You are carrying knowledge that the room is not getting, and the hedges are not modesty, they are bandaging. It is written that we have this treasure in jars of clay (2 Corinthians 4:7), which is the actual doctrine of humility and has nothing to do with qualifying every sentence, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries what you say, which He has been doing all along including through the hedges.

And the scanning, which costs a third of you.

That is a body doing surveillance in a room that is not dangerous. It is exhausting and it is invisible and it has been running for four years, and it does not make your teaching safer, it just makes it more tiring.

You are able to teach with the whole of yourself, and the third of you that is on watch can come off duty. Scripture says perfect love casts out fear (1 John 4:18), and it is His Spirit who is in the room whether or not anybody in the second row knows a passage better than you do.

The breakthrough

So take one hedge out this week.

One. From a sentence you have known cold for fifteen years. Say the thing without the bandage in front of it and let it land on somebody the way it was meant to.

Because the event four years ago was that a woman taught something well for twenty minutes with a gap in the middle of it, and somebody who knew that passage filled the gap in ninety seconds, and everybody was better off, including her, and two people said it had been really good.

That is not a fall at all, in fact. That is a room working. But it landed as one, and what landed has been running your sentences ever since.

You are not disqualified from being certain, and nothing about that afternoon revoked what you know. It is written that they took him aside and explained the way of God more accurately (Acts 18:26), and three verses later that same man is described as greatly helping those who had believed, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a five verse story about a corrected teacher and hands it back to a woman scanning a second row four years later.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud with your hand open, in the room or the kitchen or the car on the way home. You have the right to speak them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you rather than earned by never having a gap. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a person. Speak first to the correction, then to the habit that has been guarding every sentence for four years, then turn and speak to Him. However He answers what you teach next, His timing is His.

  1. Correction in that room, you are one paragraph and you are not my subject. The Word kept every compliment it had paid to a man before it corrected him, and it did not take one of them back afterward.
  2. Habit of hedging what I know cold, you are bandaging and you are coming off in the name of Jesus. It is written that we have this treasure in jars of clay, and the Spirit has been carrying what I say the whole time, hedges and all.
  3. Lord, they took a bold man aside and filled the gap and he went on greatly helping people, and You have never once removed a teacher for having a gap. My hand is open, one hedge comes out this week, and what lands in anybody is Yours.
