Caught, Not DroppedPsalm 37:24

She Stopped Halfway Through And Sat Down

This message is for a woman who was asked to speak at something, got about halfway, could not go on, and sat down in front of a room she has been avoiding for three years

They had asked her in the spring and she had said yes without much fuss, because it was a small thing and she had done small things before.

She wrote it out. Four pages, longhand, and she went over it enough times that she barely needed the pages, and the night before she read the whole of it out loud in the kitchen to nobody and it was fine.

She got about halfway.

It was not nerves. She would want that said, because people assumed nerves afterward and she let them, and letting them has cost her something. It was that the middle part turned out to be closer to something in her own life than she had allowed for when she was writing it in the kitchen, and it arrived in her throat all at once, in a room, in front of about fifty people.

She stopped. She stood there for a while. Somebody at the front said take your time, which was kind and made it worse.

And then she said, I am sorry, and she folded the pages, and she went and sat down.

Somebody else got up and did something, and it was fine, and afterward three people were extremely nice to her at the back and she said she was fine and she went home.

Three years.

She has not been back to that room. She has a route now that does not go past it, and she did not design that route on purpose, and she noticed about a year in that it existed.

She has said no to two things since. Both times politely, both times with a reason that was true enough to say out loud.

And here is what sits underneath all of it, and she has never put it into a sentence before, but if she did the sentence would be: I found out in front of fifty people what I am actually made of.

And you have a halfway too. Something you could not finish where people could see it, and you have been quietly routing around that room ever since.

She Stopped Halfway Through And Sat Down

Though he falls, he shall not be cast headlong

There is a verse in Psalm thirty-seven that a great many people have quoted at each other, and what makes it useful is the thing most people skip over when they quote it.

Though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the Lord upholds his hand.Psalm 37:24

Read the first three words. Though he fall.

The falling is in the sentence. It is not warned against. It is not treated as the thing that ought not to have happened. The verse simply concedes it, right at the front, as a normal feature of the life it is describing, and then it tells you what is true underneath it.

You fell and you were not cast headlong, and both of those happened in the same room on the same evening. It is written, though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the Lord upholds his hand (Psalm 37:24), and it is the Holy Spirit who makes an old psalm land on a woman who has been rerouting her walk for three years to avoid a building.

Now let us take the nerves, because you let people believe it and it cost you.

You know it was not nerves. It was that the middle of the thing came closer to your own life than you had reckoned for while you were writing it at the kitchen table, and it arrived all at once, in public, with no warning.

That is not weakness. That is what happens to a person who agreed to say something true. Somebody who stands up with nothing of themselves in what they are saying is never in danger of that, and their evening goes smoothly, and nothing much happens in the room either.

You were not undone by a defect in you, you were undone by the cost of saying something real, and those are different things. Scripture says the Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18), and it is the Holy Spirit who was nearest to you in the exact minute you stood there and could not go on, which is not how you have remembered that minute.

And the sentence underneath, which deserves the light.

I found out in front of fifty people what I am actually made of.

Look at that as a claim. What it actually says is that a person's truest self is revealed by their worst two minutes in public. Nobody would apply that to somebody they love. You would not apply it to your own daughter, and you would find it cruel if somebody applied it to her.

You are not defined by two minutes, and no honest account of a person has ever been written from their hardest afternoon. It is written that man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart (1 Samuel 16:7), and it is His Spirit who has the whole of you in view, including the four longhand pages and the kitchen and the yes you said in the spring without fuss.

And the folding of the pages, which is the part that hurts most when you think about it.

You did not run out. You did not blame anybody. You said I am sorry, which you did not owe anybody, and you sat down with dignity in a room that was watching, and then you were gracious to three people at the back afterward while carrying something enormous.

You conducted yourself well in the worst two minutes you have had in public, and that is what actually happened, and it has never once been part of the story you tell yourself. Scripture says a bruised reed He will not break, and a faintly burning wick He will not quench (Isaiah 42:3), and it is the Holy Spirit who has kept that wick lit for three years while you walked the long way round.

The breakthrough

So take the route past the building this week. Not to go in. Just to walk past it.

What happened in there was that a woman stood up to say something true, got to the part that was closest to her own life, and could not carry it, and sat down. That is the whole of it. It is not a discovery about her character, and it is not a public verdict, and fifty people who were kind about it at the time have almost certainly not thought about it since.

You have thought about it for three years, alone, which means the trial has been running with only one person in the room and that person doing both jobs.

You are upheld, and you were upheld in the minute you sat down, and there has never been a second since when you were not. It is written that the Lord upholds his hand (Psalm 37:24), and it is the Holy Spirit who makes an ancient promise about a hand under somebody real to a woman who has believed for three years that she fell on her own.

The four pages are probably still in a drawer. That is not a monument. It is just paper, and half of it was said out loud, and the half that was said out loud was true.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud on the step with your hand open. You have the right to speak them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you rather than earned by finishing what you started. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a person. Speak first to the unfinished talk, then to the sentence you have never said out loud about what you found out that night, then turn and speak to Him. However He answers what comes after, His timing is His.

  1. Half a talk left in a room three years ago, you are unfinished business and you are not my name. The Word says though he fall he shall not be cast headlong, and the falling is right there in the sentence and so is the hand.
  2. Sentence that says I found out what I am made of in two minutes, you are put down in the name of Jesus. It is written that man looks on the outward appearance but the Lord looks on the heart, and the Spirit has the whole of me in view, kitchen and longhand pages and all.
  3. Lord, You upheld my hand while I folded those pages and sat down, and I did not know that at the time and I know it now. My hand is open on this step, and the finishing of what I started is Yours to arrange.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
