He Is Always The One Who Stays

He has sat in a hospital corridor at four in the morning eleven times in twenty years, for eight different families.

He knows which vending machine on which floor gives change. He knows what to bring and what not to say and when a person wants a hand on their back and when they want two feet of space, and he learned all of it by being there, over and over, quietly, for two decades.

He is the one who stays after everybody else has gone home. Everybody knows that about him and it is the truest thing about him socially.

And nobody has ever sat with him.

He noticed that on a Wednesday about a year ago and it went through him like something cold, and then he did what he does with things, which is put it somewhere and carry on.

There was a stretch four years ago that was genuinely bad. He did not tell anybody, and that is not an accusation of anybody, because you cannot expect people to know a thing you have not said.

But he also knows, and this is the part he has never said out loud, that he did not tell anybody partly because he could not picture it. He could not picture the conversation. He knows exactly how to be the person on the chair beside the bed and he has no idea at all how to be the person in the bed.

So it stayed his.

And what has settled over twenty years is not resentment. He is genuinely glad to be the one who goes. It is more that he has stopped experiencing his own situation as the kind of thing that has a chair beside it.

Other people's hard weeks are events, with people in them. His are just weather.

And you are the one who stays. You are excellent at it and everybody knows it about you, and you have quietly stopped imagining that your own week is the sort of thing anybody would sit down for.

Engraved, which is not a thing that gets forgotten

There is a line in Isaiah spoken to people who were certain they had been forgotten, and the image in it is deliberately physical.

Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands.Isaiah 49:16

Engraved. Not written down, which can be lost. Not remembered, which depends on somebody's attention holding.

Cut in. On the palms, which is the part of a hand a person cannot avoid seeing all day, because it is in front of them every time they do anything at all.

And the sentence just before it is the one that gets quoted: can a woman forget her nursing child. God's answer is that even that can happen, and then He says this, which is His guarantee that it cannot happen with Him.

You are engraved rather than remembered, and the difference is that engraving does not require anybody to think of you. It is written, behold, I have engraved you on the palms of My hands (Isaiah 49:16), and it is the Holy Spirit who takes an old image and makes it a fact a man can carry into a hospital corridor at four in the morning.

Now the thing you have never said out loud.

You could not picture the conversation. You know exactly how to be the man in the chair and you have no idea how to be the man in the bed.

That is not a moral failing and it is not pride, and it is worth understanding what it actually is. Twenty years of practice in one role produces enormous competence in that role and none at all in the other one, and a person who has never received does not have the muscle for it.

It is not that you refuse. It is that you genuinely do not know the moves.

You are unpracticed rather than unwilling, and that is a completely different problem and a much smaller one. Scripture says God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble (James 4:6), and it is the Holy Spirit who teaches a man to receive, which is a learned thing and not a character trait.

And the four years ago, which needs saying plainly.

There was a bad stretch and nobody knew and you have been very fair about that, because you did not tell them and people are not mind readers.

But notice what you have concluded from a fact you created. You did not tell anybody, and then you experienced nobody coming, and the second half has quietly become evidence about your worth when it was in fact evidence about the information available.

You have been reading the results of your own silence as a verdict from other people. It is written that the Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18), and it is the Holy Spirit who was near through the whole of that stretch, which is the one presence in it that never depended on you saying anything.

And your weeks being weather rather than events.

That is the sentence that gives the whole thing away, and it is the one thing on this page you should sit with.

Other people's hard weeks have people in them because somebody told somebody. Yours have nobody in them because nobody was told, and over twenty years you have inferred a rule about the nature of your own life from that pattern, and the rule is false.

You are the same kind of person as everybody you have sat beside, and your weeks are the same kind of thing as theirs. Scripture says bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ (Galatians 6:2), and the word is one another, which is a two way sentence, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes both directions of it possible in a man who has only ever practiced one.

And this page will not tell you to tell somebody.

That would be handing an instruction to a man who has already carried eight families, and it would make the receiving into one more thing he has to organize. There is no task here.

You are being told what is already true, not sent to arrange it. It is written that I am with you always, to the end of the age (Matthew 28:20), and it is His Spirit who has been in every corridor with you, including the eleven times when everybody assumed he was only there for somebody else.
