The light at the junction by the school is a long one. Ninety seconds, if you get it wrong. She knows this because she has been using it.
She says the sentence there. Quietly, out loud, with the radio down, while the car in front of her creeps forward six inches for no reason.
It is not a speech. It is one sentence and a bit. Twenty-two words, if she does the version she settled on in the spring.
She has been doing this since last October. Eleven months.
She has tried it three different ways. There was a longer one at the start, which she abandoned because it explained too much and the explaining sounded like an apology. There was a very short one in February that turned out to be too blunt, and she could hear how it would land, and she softened it.
The one she has now is right. She actually knows it is right. She has tested it against every mood she has, in the car, at the light, and it holds up.
She has never said it.
Not to the person it is for. Not once, in eleven months, and she has been in a room with them at least forty times in that stretch, and there have been at least six occasions where the moment was open and quiet and nothing at all was in the way.
What happens is very small and it happens every time. Her mouth gets dry. Something in her chest goes tight and low. And a sentence arrives, fully formed, which is: not like this, not right now, you will do it badly.
So she says something else. Something ordinary and kind, because she is a kind person, and the moment closes over the top of it like water.
Then she drives home, and there is the light, and she says it perfectly.
She is not a coward, and she is not a fraud. She is a woman who has practiced obedience into a very high polish, and has never once let it out of the car.
And you have a sentence too. You could say it right now. You have it word perfect.

He argued about his mouth and was answered about God's
There is a man standing in front of a burning bush having the most reasonable argument in Scripture.
He has been told to go and speak. And he says, more or less, you have the wrong person, because I am not good with words, I never have been, I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.
Notice something about the objection. It is true. Nothing in the account contradicts it. Nowhere does God say, actually your delivery is fine.
Here is what He says instead.
Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall speak.Exodus 4:12
He does not fix the mouth. He fills it.
You are not being asked to become an eloquent person before you open your mouth, and you never were, because the eloquence was never the arrangement. It is written that the Lord promised to be with the mouth and teach what is to be spoken (Exodus 4:12), and it is the Holy Spirit whom Jesus later named as the One who teaches in that very hour what ought to be said (Luke 12:12), which means the help arrives at the light, not the day before.
That last part is where an eleven month rehearsal quietly goes wrong.
Rehearsing feels like preparing to obey. It has the shape of diligence and the taste of care, and for a while it genuinely is both. But past a certain point a rehearsal becomes the place the obedience lives, and the car becomes a very safe room where the sentence is always said perfectly and nobody is ever in it.
You have been faithful in the car and it counts for something real, and the same faithfulness is being invited into a room with a person in it, which is a step and not a verdict. Scripture says God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power and love and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7), and the Spirit named there is not a Spirit of better wording. He is a Spirit of going.
Now the tightness in the chest, because that deserves an honest answer.
The sentence that shows up in the room, the one that says you will do it badly, is not from God, and it is not information. It has never once been accompanied by anything that could be checked. It arrives at exactly the moment the thing could happen and never at any other time, which is a tell.
You are not the person that voice describes, and its timing gives it away, and you are free to keep going while it talks. It is written that we take every thought captive to obey Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5), and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a woman able to hear a sentence in her own head and simply not do what it says.
And the last thing, which is the freeing one.
It does not have to come out at the polish it has in the car. That is not a lower standard. That is what actually happens when a human being says a true thing to another human being: it comes out slightly wrong, in the wrong order, with a stumble in the middle, and it lands anyway, because what carries it was never the phrasing.
You have permission for a clumsy version, and a clumsy said thing is infinitely closer to obedience than a perfect unsaid one. Scripture says the treasure is in jars of clay so that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us (2 Corinthians 4:7), and the Spirit is the One carrying the words across, which is why they do not need to be beautiful to arrive.
So take the sentence out of the car.
Not the whole of it, if the whole of it is too much today. The first line. Just the opening clause, the one you settled on in the spring, and then let whatever happens after it happen.
Nobody on this page is going to tell you who it is for or what it says. This page has never been in your car and does not know your life, and it is not going to hand a young mother a script for a conversation it has never heard.
But you know. You have known since October, and the fact that it survived three drafts and eleven months is not a small thing about it.
You have the mouth for this today, and it is not the mouth you were trying to build in the car, it is the one He said He would be with. It is written, go, and I will be with your mouth (Exodus 4:12), and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes an ancient promise to a stammering man in a desert land in a kitchen with cereal bowls on the counter.
The light was never the room. It was only ever a place to wait.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud in the car if that is where you are, and then get out of the car. You have the right to speak them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you rather than earned by finally getting the wording right. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a person. Speak first to the rehearsal, then to the thing you have quietly believed about yourself at forty open moments, then turn and speak to Him. However He answers what comes after it, that part belongs to Him.
- Sentence I have practiced at eleven months of red lights, you are leaving my car today. You were never a rehearsal for obedience, you were obedience waiting on a room, and today you get a room.
- Voice that arrives only when the moment opens and tells me I will do it badly, you are silenced in the name of Jesus. It is written that we take every thought captive to obey Christ, and the Spirit is the One who lets me hear you and keep walking.
- Lord, You said go and I will be with your mouth, and You never once offered to make me eloquent first. The first line goes out today, clumsy if it comes out clumsy, and the carrying of it is Yours.
