The Date He Kept Moving Forward

This message is for a man who has written the same date in his calendar seven times over three years, moved it forward every time without ever canceling it, and has begun to dread opening the calendar

The first time he wrote it down, he used a pen, which tells you something about how he meant it.

It was a Thursday in April, three years ago, and he wrote the date about six weeks out, and he remembers the small settled feeling of having decided.

He has moved it seven times since.

He has never canceled it. Not once. That is the thing he holds on to, and he says it to himself in a particular tone: I have never taken it off the calendar. Which is true, and which he has come to lean on the way a man leans on a wall that is slowly going over.

The moves were all reasonable. The second one was a family thing, unavoidable, and anybody would have moved it. The third was work. The fourth he cannot fully account for and does not enjoy looking at. The fifth and sixth were close together in a bad winter. The seventh was in the spring and he moved it before anything had even gone wrong, which is the one that woke him up.

Because that time he moved it in advance. He looked at the date coming toward him about ten days out and he pushed it, calmly, in the morning, with his tea going cold, and nothing had happened.

Now he does a thing he did not use to do. He opens the calendar with a small dread in his chest, and his eye goes to that date before it goes anywhere else, and something in him tightens.

The date has become the problem. That is what he has not seen yet.

It started as a decision and it has become a place to put the decision, and every time it moves it takes the decision with it, safely, into a month he does not have to be in yet.

Three years. Seven dates. Not one cancellation, and not one thing done.

And you have a date. Perhaps not written down. But you have a when, and you have moved it, and you know how many times.

The Date He Kept Moving Forward

He was told to go, and the account says he went

There is a sentence in Genesis so short that most people read past it, and it is one of the most striking sentences about obedience anywhere in Scripture.

A man is told to leave his country, his kindred and his father's house and go to a land that is not named for him. No map. No timescale. No details about the destination, which is described only as a land that I will show you.

And then this.

So Abram went, as the Lord had told him.Genesis 12:4

That is the whole of it. So Abram went.

There is no planning section. There is no interval in the text between the instruction and the going, no period of arranging, no phase where he identified a suitable month. The account does not say he prepared thoroughly, and it does not say he prepared badly. It simply puts the going right up against the telling.

You are permitted to close the gap between the telling and the going, and that gap is not sacred and it is not preparation, it is where three years went. It is written, so Abram went, as the Lord had told him (Genesis 12:4), and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a sentence that plain uncomfortable in the best way in a man reading it on an ordinary evening.

Now let us be fair to the moves, all seven of them.

Most of them were genuinely reasonable, and this page is not going to pretend otherwise. Families need things. Work is real. A bad winter takes what it takes, and a man who moved a date twice in a bad winter is not a man who despises the God who gave it to him.

You are not a promise breaker, and three years of moving something is not the same as three years of refusing it, and that distinction is real and it is yours. Scripture says a bruised reed He will not break and a smoldering wick He will not quench (Isaiah 42:3), and it is the Holy Spirit who has kept this thing smoldering in you across three years and seven dates without ever letting it go out.

But the seventh move is the one that matters, and you already know why.

You moved it before anything had gone wrong. Ten days out, in the morning, calmly. There was no reason on the table, and that is the moment the mechanism showed itself: the date was not a plan for doing the thing. The date had become the way of not doing it while still being a man who intends to.

You are free to stop scheduling this today, and stopping is not giving up on it, because the calendar was never where obedience lived. Scripture says do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring (Proverbs 27:1), and it is His Spirit rather than a diary who has been holding this steady in you, which is why it is still here after seven moves.

And here is the replacement, which is deliberately small.

Not a better date. Not a firmer commitment with a deadline attached, because a deadline is the same instrument that has already failed seven times, and handing it back to you would be cruelty dressed as help.

Something in the next hour. Small, real, and unscheduled, done before there is time to write anything down.

You have an hour, and an hour is not a lesser thing than a date, it is the only unit that has ever actually been available to anybody. It is written that today is the day of salvation (2 Corinthians 6:2), and it is the Holy Spirit who makes the word today mean this actual hour, in this actual room, rather than a general encouragement about promptness.

The breakthrough

So open the calendar, and take the date off.

Not to abandon the thing. To stop the thing from having a hiding place. As long as there is a date on there, some part of you is at rest, and that rest has cost you three years, and it will quietly take another three if it is left where it is.

Nobody on this page is going to tell you what the thing is or how to do it. This page has never seen your calendar and does not know your family or your work.

But you know what could be done in the next hour. Not the whole of it. The small first real piece of it, the one that has been available since the first date in April three years ago and has never once needed six weeks of notice.

You have an unscheduled hour in front of you and everything required for the first piece of it is already in your hands. It is written, so Abram went, as the Lord had told him (Genesis 12:4), and it is the Holy Spirit who turns four words about a man in Genesis into a man standing up in his own house with the tea going cold.

The date was never the decision. It was only the place you kept putting one.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud with the calendar shut. You have the right to speak them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you rather than earned by finally keeping a date. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a person. Speak first to the date, then to the thing you have quietly believed about yourself across seven moves of it, then turn and speak to Him. Whatever He does with the hour, the outcome is His.

  1. Date I have moved seven times, you are not a decision and you never were one. The Word puts the going right up against the telling, so the going happens in this hour and you are coming off the page.
  2. Dread that has been waiting on that calendar square for three years, you are evicted in the name of Jesus. It is written that He does not quench a smoldering wick, and the Spirit who kept this alight through seven moves did not keep it burning in order to accuse me with it.
  3. Lord, a man was told to go to a land You would not even name, and the whole account of his obedience is three words long. I am going in this hour with no date written down, and the land You are showing me is Yours.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
