She did it in the spring, and she did it properly, which is to say she did not do it in her head.
She had been circling it for two years. She knew what she was supposed to do and she knew she was not doing it, and then one evening in April she sat down and she did the whole of it, out loud, in an empty front room, naming things, and it took nearly an hour and she was wrung out at the end of it like a dishcloth.
She meant every word. There was nothing performed about it. If God has ever seen a woman genuinely let something go, He saw it that night.
And she went to bed lighter than she had been in two years.
Here is what she expected. She would not have said it out loud, and she would have been slightly embarrassed to be asked, but she expected the house to warm up.
She expected something in the atmosphere to change. A softening. A phone call, maybe, out of nowhere. Some sign that the thing she had done in the front room had gone out into the world and moved something.
That was in April.
It is quieter now than it was. That is the plain truth of it. Not colder exactly, but more careful, the way a house gets when everybody in it is being polite. There have been fewer calls, not more. The one conversation she thought might happen has not happened, and there was a moment in July where it could have and instead they talked about a car.
And she has begun to think, quietly, in the way a person thinks a thing they would never say at church: what exactly was that for.
She is not bitter. She would tell you honestly that she does not regret it. But she has stopped expecting anything from it, and something in her has gone flat about the whole business, and she has noticed that she has not prayed about it since about June.
And you did something in obedience too, and you had a picture of what would follow, and what followed was nothing, or worse than nothing, and you have gone quiet about it.

He said it plainly: I have kept my heart clean for nothing
There is a psalm that ought to be read out loud in every kitchen where somebody has done the right thing and got nothing back.
The man writing it has watched people who do not care about God at all, and they are comfortable, and their houses are easy, and his is not. And he says this.
All in vain have I kept my heart clean and washed my hands in innocence.Psalm 73:13
That is in Scripture. Somebody wrote that down and it was kept and it was set to music and sung in the assembly for a thousand years, and nobody edited it out for being too raw.
You are permitted to say the whole of it, and there is a psalm in your Bible that says it first, so nothing about your flatness has put you outside anything. It is written, all in vain have I kept my heart clean (Psalm 73:13), and it is the Holy Spirit who preserved a sentence like that in the songbook of God's own people so that a woman at a kitchen table would not think she was the first.
Now watch what changes for him, because this is the whole of the psalm and almost nobody reads to the end of it.
Nothing in his circumstances changes. Not one thing. The comfortable people stay comfortable. His own situation is exactly where it was.
What changes is that he goes into the sanctuary of God, and he sees the end of the matter, and then he says a sentence that is one of the tenderest in the Old Testament: nevertheless I am continually with You, You hold my right hand.
He came in with a complaint about the arrangement. He left holding a hand.
You have not been left holding nothing, and what you are actually holding is not the thing you were watching for in the atmosphere of your house. Scripture says nevertheless I am continually with You, You hold my right hand (Psalm 73:23), and it is the Holy Spirit who moves a woman from asking what it was for to noticing Whose hand is in hers, which is not a lesser answer and it is the only one that has ever held anybody.
Now let us look straight at the expectation, gently, because it was not a foolish one.
You expected the room to warm because somewhere along the way somebody taught you, probably without meaning to, that forgiveness is a lever. Do the hard inward thing and the outward thing improves. It is preached constantly and it is not in the text.
Forgiveness in Scripture is release. It puts down a debt you were carrying. It does not oblige another person to move, and it never once promised to. What it does is take the weight out of your own hands, and that is real, and it happened in your front room in April whether the house got quieter or not.
You are already carrying less than you were in March, and that is what happened that night, and nothing since has taken it back. It is written that if we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9), and it is His Spirit who does the actual releasing in a person, which is why the lightness you felt going to bed that night was not your imagination.
And the guardrail on this, because this page will not lie to you.
Nobody here is going to tell you that the phone call is coming, or that the conversation will happen if you wait, or that the house will warm by autumn. That is not ours to say and saying it would be a promise nobody was authorized to make.
You are not being handed a forecast, you are being handed what is already yours, and the difference between those two is the difference between a page that helps and a page that sells. Scripture says the secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us (Deuteronomy 29:29), and it is the Holy Spirit who lets a person live peacefully with a shut door without pretending to know what is behind it.
So sit at the table and let the house be as quiet as it is.
You are not going to be told that the quiet means something. It may mean nothing at all about you. Houses go quiet for a hundred reasons and most of them are somebody else's, and you are not responsible for the temperature of a room you are not the only person standing in.
What happened in April happened. It was received. It is not sitting in an unopened bag in a hall somewhere waiting to be validated by a phone call.
You are a woman who let it go, and that is finished and it is behind you, and nothing that has failed to happen since can reach back and undo it. It is written, nevertheless I am continually with You, You hold my right hand (Psalm 73:23), and it is the Holy Spirit who takes an old psalm from a man who nearly gave up on the whole arrangement and sets it down at a kitchen table in the ordinary evening.
And you have not prayed about it since June, and that is not held against you either. The hand that has been holding yours does not let go when a woman goes quiet for a season, and it has been holding through every week of it.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud at the table with the back door open. You have the right to speak them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you rather than earned by forgiving well enough. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a person. Speak first to the quiet, then to the thing you have quietly concluded about the whole business since June, then turn and speak to Him. However He answers what comes next, His timing is His.
- Quiet in this house, you are not the answer to what I did. The Word never once made release a lever on another person, so you have nothing to say about what happened in that front room.
- Flatness since June, you are lifted off me in the name of Jesus. It is written, nevertheless I am continually with Him and He holds my right hand, and the Spirit has held it through every quiet month without waiting for me to ask.
- Lord, a man wrote in a psalm that he had kept his heart clean for nothing, and You did not take the psalm out of the book. I am holding Your hand in a quiet house, and the end of the matter is Yours to see and not mine.
