He did it in September, and he did it properly, and there was nothing halfway about it.
It cost him something real on the day, and he paid it without arguing, and driving home that evening he had the clearest sense he has ever had that he had done the right thing.
Then October came in hard. Then November was worse than October, in a way that had nothing to do with weather and everything to do with weather, because that is how a hard season works: it is one thing and then it is four things and then it is the same four things again in January.
By February he was standing in the yard at six in the morning in the dark, doing a job he has done nine hundred times, and he heard himself say out loud: I do not think I heard You at all.
He was not being dramatic. There was nobody there. He said it the way a man says a thing he has been carrying quietly for a while and has finally got tired enough to put down.
And here is the arithmetic that had been running underneath him all winter, and he had never once written it out, because writing it out would have made it something he had to look at.
He obeyed in September. Everything since has been harder. Therefore either God asked for that and does not mind what it cost, or he was never asked at all and he did an expensive thing for no reason.
Those were the only two options he could see. And of the two, the second one is the one that gets you through a Tuesday, because a man who was mistaken can go back to being sensible, and a man who obeyed and got a bad winter has to live with a God he does not currently understand.
So he has been quietly moving toward the second one. Not deciding it. Drifting.
And you are doing the same arithmetic somewhere. You did the thing. It got harder. And you have been treating the getting harder as information about whether you heard.
He said it straight to God, and God did not rebuke him for it
Something happens in Exodus that almost nobody preaches, and it is the exact thing you have been afraid to say.
Moses does what he was told. He goes to Pharaoh. He says the words he was given. And the immediate result is that the workload on the people is doubled, straw is taken away, the foremen are beaten, and the very people he came to help tell him to his face that he has made everything worse.
And then Moses turns around and says this to God.
Then Moses turned to the Lord and said, "O Lord, why have you done evil to this people? Why did you ever send me? For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has done evil to this people, and you have not delivered your people at all."Exodus 5:22-23
Read it again and notice what is not there.
There is no rebuke. God does not correct his tone. God does not tell him he has spoken presumptuously, and the account does not treat that question as a lapse. What follows in the next chapter is God restating who He is and what He is going to do, which is an answer, not a reprimand.
You are allowed to say the whole of it out loud, and saying it does not put you outside anything, because the man who said it first is the one God kept sending. It is written that Moses turned to the Lord and asked why he had ever been sent (Exodus 5:22), and it is the Holy Spirit who gives a man the freedom to be that plain with God without one thing changing about where he stands.
Now the arithmetic, because it needs breaking, and it is broken by one fact.
Nowhere in Scripture is improvement in conditions offered as the proof that a word was genuine. Not once. It is not there in Exodus, where obedience doubled the bricks. It is not there in the account of the man who walked on the water, where the wind is described as contrary before he steps out and the text never says it dropped while he was walking on it.
Peter walked in the wind. The wind was still up the entire time.
You have been reading the weather as a verdict, and it has never been a verdict, and that is the single thing that has been crushing you since October. Scripture says that in the world we will have tribulation, and in the same breath says take heart, He has overcome the world (John 16:33), and it is His Spirit who makes those two clauses live in the same person at the same time, which is a thing no amount of reasoning can arrange.
And the other half, which has to be said just as plainly.
Hard is not proof either. This page will not do the thing where suffering gets promoted into confirmation and a man is told his bad winter means he must be on the right road. That is the same false instrument turned upside down, and it has ruined people.
You are not being handed a new way to score your obedience, and the scoring itself is what is being taken off you today. It is written that we walk by faith and not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7), and it is the Holy Spirit rather than any reading of the conditions who bears witness with our spirit about what is true.
So what is left, when the weather is not evidence in either direction.
What is left is the word itself, and what you knew on the drive home in September, and the character of the God who said it.
You have a September that is still true in February, and nothing that happened in between has been able to reach back and change what was said. Scripture says the grass withers and the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever (Isaiah 40:8), and it is His Spirit who keeps a September word standing in a man in the dark at six in the morning in a yard he is tired of.
So stand in the yard, and stop doing the arithmetic.
Not because the winter was not real. It was real, and this page is not going to talk you out of it or tell you it was secretly good. It was hard, and you paid for something, and you have every right to say so out loud to God the way a man in Exodus did without being struck down for it.
Stop doing the arithmetic because the arithmetic uses the wrong units. Conditions were never a measurement of whether you heard. They are weather. They are what is happening around a man, and they have never once been a report on what God said to him.
You are standing on what you heard in September, and the winter has no authority to overturn it and never had that authority. It is written that the word of our God stands forever (Isaiah 40:8), and it is the Holy Spirit who has kept that September in you all the way through a February you did not enjoy, which is not a small thing and it is not your own strength.
He is standing in front of you in the dark yard, and He was there in October and November too, and the whole of the difference between a man who quits and a man who stands is knowing that.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud in the yard, in the dark, at whatever hour you are actually up. You have the right to speak them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you rather than earned by getting an easier winter. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a person. Speak first to the winter, then to the conclusion you have been quietly drifting toward since October, then turn and speak to Him. Whatever He does in the weeks after you say them is His, and the outcome is His to decide.
- Winter that came in behind my obedience, you are weather and you are not a verdict. The Word never once offered better conditions as proof, so you do not get to tell me what I heard in September.
- Conclusion that I was never asked and paid for nothing, you are put down in the name of Jesus. It is written that the grass withers and the flower fades but the word of our God stands forever, and the Spirit has kept that September standing in me through every month since.
- Lord, a man told You to Your face that You had made it worse and You answered him with who You are, so I am telling You plainly and I am staying where You put me. The wind is still up and I am still on the water, and the water is Yours.
