Caught, Not Dropped2 Corinthians 12:9

It Failed And People Had Trusted Him With It

This message is for a man whose attempt at something did not work after people he loves had backed him publicly, and who has been unable to look two of them in the eye at family gatherings for three years

The worst part is not the thing itself. He worked that out about a year in.

The worst part is a family lunch, which happens about six times a year, and specifically two people at it.

His uncle, who said in front of everybody at a table very like this one that he had always known this one would do something, and who then did more than say things.

And his cousin, who is two years older and who has never once mentioned it, in three years, which is its own particular kind of loud.

He can be at that table for four hours. He talks to everybody. He carries plates and he refills glasses and he is genuinely good company, and he has developed a way of moving around a courtyard that keeps him at an angle to those two men for the entire afternoon.

He has never worked out whether they have noticed.

The thing did not work. That is all that happened, in the end. It ran for a while, and there were reasons, some of which were his and some of which were nobody's, and it stopped.

Nobody lost anything they could not take. He needs that on the record because it is true. But people had put something behind him in front of other people, and that is the part that will not settle, because what was actually spent was not the money.

What was spent was their public confidence in him, and that is not a thing anybody can be repaid for.

Three years.

He works hard now. Harder than before, at something ordinary that suits him. He is doing well and he says so when asked, lightly, and he never elaborates.

And what he has quietly decided, and he has never said it in this form to anyone, is that he is a man who is allowed to work but not to be believed in.

That is a rule he lives by. He has never once examined where it came from.

And you have a table like that. Two people you angle away from, and a rule about yourself that you have never taken out and looked at in the daylight.

It Failed And People Had Trusted Him With It

The verse everybody puts on a wall was written by a man who had been told no

There is a sentence about weakness that is on more walls than almost any other, and the trouble with a wall is that it removes the situation.

Paul has asked God three times to take a thing away. Three times, which means he asked and God did not, and then he asked again, and God did not, and then he asked a third time.

The answer he got was not the thing he asked for.

But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.2 Corinthians 12:9

This is a man who did not get what he asked for, writing about it publicly, to a church that had people in it who questioned whether he was up to much.

He does not hide it. He does not manage the angle at the table. He writes it down and sends it to the people most likely to use it, and he calls it the place where the power actually rests.

You have a weakness that is not a disgrace, and the man who wrote the most quoted sentence about weakness had a public one and told everybody. It is written that His grace is sufficient and His power is made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9), and it is the Holy Spirit who takes that off a wall and puts it back where it belongs, which is on a man who asked three times and was told no.

Now the two men at the table.

Your uncle said something in public and then did more than say it. Notice what has happened to that in your account: you have converted his belief in you into a debt, and you are servicing it with three years of angles.

He did not lend you a verdict. He gave you a gift, publicly, and gifts do not become debts when they do not produce a return, and if he heard you describing it that way he would be wounded.

You are not in debt to somebody who believed in you, and belief was never a loan. Scripture says love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things (1 Corinthians 13:7), and it is the Holy Spirit who put that kind of love in an uncle, which means what he did at that table came from further up than either of you.

And the cousin who has never mentioned it.

You hear his silence as judgment. There are at least three other readings and every one of them is more likely: that he does not know how to raise it, that he is protecting you, or that he genuinely does not think about it because it is not the most interesting thing about you to him.

You have been reading a silence you have never once tested, and the reading is three years old and has never been checked. It is written that love does not keep a record of wrongs (1 Corinthians 13:5), and it is His Spirit who has been at every one of those lunches, in a courtyard, with two men who have not been running the tally you assume they are running.

And the rule.

A man who is allowed to work but not to be believed in.

Say it out loud once and hear it. Nobody would accept that rule for anybody they love. It is not a description of reality; it is a sentence built to make a shameful thing bearable by turning it into a permanent policy, because a policy hurts less than an open wound.

You are allowed to be believed in, and nobody anywhere has ruled otherwise. Scripture says there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1), and it is the Holy Spirit who bears witness with your spirit that you are a son, which is a status that has never been conditional on a venture working.

The breakthrough

So stop angling at the table.

Not by making a speech about it, and not by raising it, and not by apologizing again to two men who have not asked for an apology and do not want one.

Just stand square to them once. Get a plate, sit down next to your cousin, and talk about something else entirely for twenty minutes.

Because what happened is that a thing did not work. It ran, there were reasons, some of them yours and some of them nobody's, and it stopped, and nobody lost what they could not take.

That is a failure. It is not a disgrace, and the fact that it was public makes it more painful and does not make it worse.

You are a man in whom the power of Christ rests, and Scripture puts that specifically on the weak place rather than beside it. It is written that His power is made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9), and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that a load bearing sentence in a courtyard rather than a nice line on a wall in somebody's hallway.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in the courtyard with your hand open, before everybody arrives. You have the right to speak them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you rather than earned by making something succeed. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a person. Speak first to the thing that failed, then to the rule you have been living by without ever examining it, then turn and speak to Him. Whatever He does next with your hands, the outcome is His to decide.

  1. Thing of mine that did not work, you are a failure and you are not a disgrace. The Word puts the power of Christ on the weak place itself, so you are where it rests rather than the reason it left.
  2. Rule that says I may work but not be believed in, you are dismantled in the name of Jesus. It is written that there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, and the Spirit bears witness that I am a son, which no venture ever purchased and no venture can spend.
  3. Lord, a man asked You three times and did not get what he asked for and then wrote the whole of it down and sent it to the people most likely to use it against him. I am standing square at that table today, my hand is open, and what anybody sees in me is Yours.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
